As the media landscape in South Africa continues to evolve, production companies will have to keep pace with an ever-changing environment. In the field of branded content, Engage-Entertainment has developed a broadcast product model called Original Brand Content, that marries the strategic needs of a brand with the power of story to affect sales-drive activations

Awards

In February 2011, Engage Entertainment won a SAFTA for the programme: Sports Playback. This 13-part documentary series won the prize for Best Sports Show of 2010. A powerful case-study in effective re-versioning and repurposing of archive material, the show looked back at some of the most significant defining moments in South African history. Sports Playback was nominated alongside ‘My Beautiful Game’ and ‘The Miracle of Mzansi’ at the gala award ceremony held at Madame Zingara’s Theatre of Dreams

New

Sitcom

April saw the broadcast of Engage Entertainment’s very first sitcom. Since its debut, ‘Gauteng Maboneng’ has proved a sure-hit with viewers on SABC 1. Co-produced with Rous House Productions, the show has been well received by critics and viewers alike, resulting in excellent AR’s. Catch it on Wednesday at 19h30 on SABC 1

Joint Managing Director / Executive Producers

Vusi Zion

In 2006 Vusi Zion (previously Twala) invested a lifelong broadcast career into Engage as a 50% partner and Joint Managing Director. Having made his on-screen television debut at 13 years old, it is an industry he knows and loves intimately. Over the years he has worked with a variety of broadcasters both as producer and on-screen talent. His creative flair and intuitive understanding of broadcast content and formats has been integral to Engage Entertainment’s growth & success. He lists the 2010 FIFA World Cup and Soccer 411 (SABC’s popular soccer preview show) as some of his most notable achievements during his time at Engage.

Steve Lorenzo

The founder and joint MD of Engage, Steve’s work experience spans brand marketing, broadcast promotions and long form television production. Since 1997 he has produced across multiple formats, first with Rapid Blue and then Engage Entertainment. These formats include live talk, sitcom, game show, music, children’s TV, documentary, sport, broadcast promotion and corporate communication. Prior to TV he spent 7 years in sales & marketing with Cadbury Schweppes, where his most delicious career highlight was launching the P.S. brand.

Sbu Ngobeni – Producer

Sbu Ngobeni is the managing producer at Engage, tasked with the responsibility of bringing professional execution across all our productions. Operationally skilled across all production disciplines, Sbu ensures the company consistently lives out its core values to create, engage & deliver. As an AFDA graduate, has shown remarkable growth graduate during his time at Engage-Entertainment , having developed through the ranks from production coordinator to producer. He is resident producer for SABC 1 flagship, Gospel Gold, and oversees all production teams within Engage.

Julian Sun – Producer – New Product Development

With 10 years of experience in the television industry, Julian Sun has worked on numerous successful television formats such as Coca-Cola Popstars, Mojo & EMS vol 1. During his 4 years at Engage Entertainment, he has produced a number of innovative projects for the company such as Media Matters and the SAFTA-award winning Sports Playback. He has also worked as a scriptwriter & researcher on projects such as Artcha & Curious Culture. Now taking up the role of New Product Development, he is responsible for the research and development of original formats for both broadcasters and brands.

Creative Director: Production Design

Peter Weatherall

Peter Weatherall has been in the industry since 1993. His first decade in television was spent working as a commercials editor for Trilion Video. Visually inspired, Pete creatively directs all of Engages production design, across graphics, edit and sound design. Over and above this responsibility, he operates as a senior editor on flagship shows, having created the unique visual style Engage is recognised for. His astute eye for creative detail ensures all productions leave Engage with an approved seal of visual excellence.

Facilities & Operations Manager

Merle Malan

With almost 40 years in the industry, Merle Malan brings a wealth of experience to Engage Entertainment. Working across all our major productions, she is tasked with assessing, managing and ensuring that all production teams are delivering optimally & profitably. Her years in the industry make Merle a constant pillar of strength in the company where she is always on-hand to ensure delivers are on time and within budget.

Finance Manager

Tracey Strydom

Tracey Strydom plays the crucial role of ensuring company profitability. Having spent a number of years working for a major auditing firm, Tracy came to Engage Entertainment seeking a more creative environment to work in. Swapping corporate culture for the exciting world of television production, she holds a key portfolio at the company responsible for transforming creative exuberance into company profit.
